52 photographs (2018) #29: Mysterious stones in Ireland

I am well aware that I have let these posts slide. But it is not because I am no longer taking photographs. Here we are in the last week of December and I am almost at roll 160! And there are a few things in there that should be shown:

During this summer were were in Ireland. It was one the the hottest summers in Ireland for more than twenty years. We made a trip up to the Beaghmore Stone Circles one of my favourite spots in Tyrone and not far from where I grew up. My father always claimed that were more stones there each time we visited, who knows? The stones were all excavated a few decades ago and are thousands of years old. The are slowly sinking back in to the bog.

So it was the first time I was there with my film cameras. It is not easy to take pictures of stones in Ireland in black and white, but I like to think I was more attentive to those chance arrangements of sky and bush and stone that I might have been in the past.

There is a long low level ground all around. I suppose there were trees here a few millennia ago, but today it is windy, desolate place even in the heights of summer.

This summer: beautiful weather. The sun shines brightly. Even on the Normandy coast it’s almost warm. So we took the train to Trouville, the beach closest to Paris. Yes, it almost looks like summer. This is what the seafront looks like. Once again, in those lovely Rollei Retro 80s tones…

Sometimes life knocks you sideways: I spent too much of September and October working, and I’ve allowed things to get ahead of me. Now I have another short (enforced) stay at home, so time to catch up. The photographs are still there, in their folders, scanned, waiting to be printed or sent out around the world.

This one is from a summer’s walk around Paris with this fine-grained ‘old school’ Rollei Retro 80s film. (Technical details: For those in the known, this is one of those ex-surveillance films from Agfa which are distributed by Maco in Germany, the other one is Retro 400s. They are nice films, but one has to be careful developing and loading as the film base is very thin. But developed and exposed right they can produce nice tones).

In total, I spent almost ten days in Copenhagen, most of those spent in meetings at the University. But I did have some time to walk around town and look for photographs.

Looking back on those photographs now, I don’t feel I was particularly inspired. There are a lot of photographs of sea and people on bicycles.  Here is a photograph that does not feature either the sea or a bicycle.

It’s nice that we can see out

I can only hope for better better photographs in other cities…
